Wrap Up Warm

With the cold weather now well and truly set in, how will the Vintage Threads shoppers wrap up warm for this weekends fair?

Will they wear an elegant cape like Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn in Balenciaga, 1950. (Photo by Irving Penn/Conde Nast Archive)?

Or stay elegant but throw on a fur shrug like with Grace Kelly on a shopping trip with Prince Rainer who has opted for a classic black coat?

Will they wrap up in fur (faux or real) like on this Vouge cover '69?

Or stick with fur but opt for the leopard trend like Edie Sedgwick?

Or will they go for sleek and sophisticated yet warm like Audrey in Charade (1963) where she wrapped up warm in head to toe Givenchy?

Or go all festive and wear Christmas sweater over a poloneck like Mr.Darcy in Bridgette Jones Diary?

Vintage Threads Christmas Fair = Christmas Shopping

This weekend we are having a longer than usual vintage fair to give all of you the opportunity to get, not only your Christmas party outfit and winter woolies, but also some original and affordable presents (so you can put more money toward the Christmas party oufit). There is handmade jewellery, kitsh homeware along with great vintage clothes; pretty much something for everyone.

It will give you a chance to Christmas shop while avoiding the awful crowds and queues of the high street. Plus, you can finish off with hog roast and warm brandy from the Christmas market just outside our doors; a festive start to the month!

We usually just run on a Saturday but this weekend we are open Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Come along and dress up as nicely as possible for the weather, I will be papping the most stylish shoppers for our blog.

Style Icon: Catherine Baba

To give us a bit more inspiration for shopping at December's Manchester Vintage Threads I have chosen to blog about a current style icon who wears a lot of vintage clothes; Catherine Baba.

As with so many others in the fashion industry, her distinguished style has become famous due to the growth of fashion blogs with her image on blogs such as jakandjil.com.

She has a feminine style, with a sort of 20's and 30's glamour, layering rich fabrics and great accessories. She is often seen wearing furs, turbans and lots of bangles.

Manchester Christmas Market

Every year there are several Christmas markets around Manchester where we can go and enjoy ourselves with some alcohol filled hot chocolate, Gluwhein and Frankfurters whilst doing a spot of Christmas shopping. For most of us it's a nice stop off on the way home from work, if not every day then at least on a Friday. The only thing that may ruin it in any way would be the weather, the alcohol is not always enough to keep us warm! All of us in the office are glad we got the opportunity to pick ourselves our winter warmers at some of the previous Vintage Threads markets. Some have chosen Barbours, others went for aviator jackets. I myself am a huge fan of the faux fur.

Style Icons of the 70's: The Runaways

Every vintage threads market is filled with clobber from the 70's and this weekend I watched a film which left me feeling inspired, but also made me wish I'd watched it before our November market. The Runaways is a film about the band of the same name and stars Kirsten Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie.

Cherie Currie's style made me drool; jumpsuits, bell bottoms and wedges to die for. It was rock star meets the Brady bunch which, like their music was somewhat ahead of it'stime. The peroxide hair, red lips and Bowie t-shirts,usually associated with Blondie, were seen years before on Cherie.

We may leave the corset and stockings that she famously wore on stage for the bedroom, but I will definitely be channeling every other look from the film. I'm just wishing I had bought the denim studded jumpsuit I had spotted at The Pillbox Vintage stall at the last market.

Royal Wedding

Had we known about the Royal engagement before the November market we would have started planning and styling our outfits! Sadly, we didn't know in time but I don't think its right to have a post that doesn't relate to Kate and Wills future wedding. Everybody loves a Royal wedding!

Aquascutum

One of our favourite things about vintage shopping is that it gives us the chance to buy some designer clobber for a fraction of the original price. In the past we have seen Chanel and Armani at Vintage Threads. At this months market, as well as the store holders being donned in Moschino, there were two Aquascutum coats on our rails. A traditional English brand that prides itself on the quality of its product, both items were both stylish and in immaculate condition. If it's good enough for the Royal family it is definitely good enough for us!
